Freelancer bookkeeping questions
Do I need bookkeeping software as a Canadian freelancer?
CRA requires you to keep records of all business income and expenses for 6 years. While you can use spreadsheets, bookkeeping software makes it easier to track HST, generate receipts, and prepare records for your accountant at tax time.
What is T2125 and do I need to file it?
T2125 (Statement of Business or Professional Activities) is the CRA form that sole proprietors and self-employed Canadians use to report business income and claim expenses. If you earn self-employment income, you file T2125 as part of your T1 personal return.
How does HST work for freelancers?
Once your revenue exceeds $30,000 in a single calendar quarter or across four consecutive quarters, you must register for HST. Once registered, you collect HST from clients and remit the net amount (collected minus paid on expenses) to CRA. SnapBooks tracks both sides automatically.
Is SnapBooks right for me if I am incorporated?
No. SnapBooks is designed for sole proprietors filing T2125. Incorporated businesses file T2 corporate returns - a different process that requires full accounting software. If you are incorporated, consult your accountant.
