Bookkeeping for Uber, Lyft,
DoorDash and Skip Drivers

You are a sole proprietor. You file T2125. SnapBooks keeps the KM log, fuel receipts, phone, HST, and year-end export in one place -- built for CRA records, not US mileage rates.

Platform Drivers Are Sole Proprietors

If you drive for Uber, Lyft, DoorDash, Skip the Dishes, Uber Eats, or a similar app and you are not on that company's payroll, the CRA treats you as self-employed. Income goes on your personal T1. Expenses and vehicle costs go on Form T2125.

That is the same form a plumber or freelancer files. The difference is volume: high kilometres, fuel every shift, a phone that is a tool, and for passenger trips, GST/HST rules that start on day one.

๐Ÿงพ
Receipts
Snap fuel, maintenance, and car-wash photos. AI reads vendor, amount, HST, and a CRA category.
๐Ÿš—
KM Logbook
Log from, to, purpose, and km. Vehicle write-off uses T2125 actuals, not the employee cents/km rate.
๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ฆ
HST / GST
Track tax collected and ITCs on gas, repairs, and phone. Alerts at $25k and $30k for work that still uses the threshold.
๐Ÿ“Š
Income and Export
Enter fares and tips. Export Expenses, Income, KM Log, Fixed Costs, and a T2125 summary for your accountant.

The Vehicle Deduction Is the Whole Game

For drivers, line 9281 (motor vehicle expenses) is usually the largest claim. SnapBooks uses the T2125 actual expense method:

Business-use % = Business KM / Total KM
Then that percent times insurance + loan interest + fuel + maintenance + registration

Tag gas as Vehicle - Fuel and repairs as Vehicle - Maintenance so they roll into the same calculation. Car washes belong with vehicle costs.

The CRA cents-per-kilometre figure is an employee allowance
It does not apply to self-employed T2125 filers. Uber drivers claim actual expenses, not 73 cents/km.

Phone, Insurance, and the Rest of the Shift

โœ“Cell phone and plan as a fixed cost at your business-use percent (T2125 line 9220).
โœ“Vehicle insurance in the vehicle pool, not as a random receipt.
โœ“Car wash and small maintenance receipts, photographed the day you pay.
โœ“Income entered when the week's fares land -- SnapBooks does not guess Uber totals for you.

HST: Rideshare Is Not the Same as Delivery

Work
Sole prop?
GST/HST registration
Uber / Lyft (passengers)
Yes
Required from the first fare. No $30,000 small-supplier exemption on taxi/ride-sharing income.
DoorDash / Skip / Uber Eats (delivery only)
Yes
The $30,000 threshold can still apply. Mix passenger trips with delivery and the ride-share rule applies.

Platforms often include tax in the customer fare and remit part of it. You can still be the registrant. SnapBooks tracks HST you record on income and ITCs on expenses. It does not file your GST/HST return or interpret your Uber remittance statement. Read the CRA pages on taxi and ride-sharing drivers, then confirm with an accountant.

What SnapBooks Does Not Do Yet

No T4A import

Uber and other platforms may send a T4A at year end. SnapBooks does not pull that slip automatically. Enter income yourself and keep the T4A with your records. Fine for organized books. Not a bank feed.

Pricing

Free tier: 15 receipts per month, no credit card. Solo is $69/yr CAD (about $5.75/mo billed annually). KM logbook, income tracking, invoicing, and the 5-sheet Excel export are on Solo.

Common Questions

Are Uber and DoorDash drivers self-employed in Canada?
Yes, if you are not an employee of the platform. You file a T1 with T2125 for that business income.
Do I register for HST on my first Uber trip?
For commercial ride-sharing and taxi services, yes -- from the first fare. Delivery-only gigs are not automatically in that rule. Check CRA and your accountant for your mix of work.
Why not just claim 73 cents/km?
That rate is for employees receiving an allowance. T2125 filers claim a percentage of actual vehicle costs, supported by a contemporaneous KM log.
Will SnapBooks read my Uber weekly statement?
No. There is no platform import and no T4A import. Type the income. Scan the receipts. Log the kilometres.
Is this tax software?
No. SnapBooks organizes records. It does not prepare or file T1, T2125, or GST/HST returns, and it is not affiliated with the CRA.
